| Artist's description: "Vulthois was a powerful samat illusionist during Inzeladun's First Age. In his youth he was extremely interested in the concepts of perception and reality. The teachings of the Suang-Ti illusionists soon bored him. He sought out the Shades of Tenebrion and learned much, becoming a cleric in their order, inspired and touched by Tenebrion. He balanced his illusionist and clerical training as he tried to learn the true nature of reality. Captivated by shadows, he retreated into darkness, and explored the world around him. He slithered among the dark drow, and spoke philosophy with the shadow people. He learned the ways of the penumbral lords, and he fought alongside Dark Stalkers and their people. Later, he traveled the lands of Angust and gained audiences with the Chaos Lords of several cities. Because of the Chaos Lords, Vulthois became interested in other planes of existence, for their reality was different than his reality. Traveling the planes left him excited, but without the answers he sought. He then met Atri the Mad, a powerful alienist. He was invited to an obscure ritual, and the experience nearly drove Vulthois insane. He contacted unspeakable beings in the horrific reaches of reality and listened to their whispered truths about reality. Vulthois took to haunting libraries and specialty bookshops in the cities of Angust, using his illusion and shadow powers to hide his true nature.
In the meantime, Vulthois continued his clerical training, for he believed Tenebrion held the secrets he desired. Vulthois' journeys into the Far Realms were often attempts to reach Tenebrion in person. When the Chaos Lords forbid Vulthois entry to their libraries, he fought back, staging raids and other attacks. His religious skills soon reached their peak, and he soon had religious control of the samat. He allied himself with disenchanted Angustians, and, together, they forged a powerful Empire. Vulthois spoke directly to Zombi, lord of serpents, and drew power from that vile source, as well as from Tenebrion. Vulthois trained powerful shadow knights as well as shadow dancer assassins to aid his machinations. Human, Orc, and Samat Penumbral Lords ruled the cities of Vulthois' empire. For a century Vulthois ruled his shadow Empire, using his shadow knights and Orcish mercenaries. He formed the Shadow Court and fought against the Angustians.
He achieved Transcendence and became an alien creature, an outsider. He grew an extra finger, a humanoid, unscaled finger on his right hand. This finger, he felt, contained great power, and he created for it a powerful ring. He spent much time writing magical tomes and creating powerful magic items. In the meantime, his Empire grew more and more oppressive. He and his Court developed the drugs still used today by the Yuan-Ti to enslave people. Eventually, during the Great Rebellion, the empire was overthrown by the Chaos Lords. However, at the brink of their downfall, Vulthois, who had been interbreeding Samat with humans to create the Yuan-Ti, gathered the nobles of the Shadow Court. They used the last of their magic to preserve themselves in a mummified state, waiting to arise in a new age...
Before his mummification, Vulthois caused his abnormal finger to be removed, so that one day it would lead to the discovery of Samat Island, where Vulthois and his court waits for the unwary to release them from their secret tombs."
